What Is a Deacon? Part 2 (1 Timothy 3:8-16)

I. What is at stake in recognizing elders and deacons (1 Tim. 3:14-16)

II. What makes someone "deacon material"? (v. 8-10)
--A man of dignity
--Not double-tongued: says what he means and sticks to it
--Not controlled by substances or stuff
--In full and whole-hearted agreement with the church's understanding of what Scripture teaches
--"Tested...beyond reproach": Over time their life is seen to line up with these qualities.

III. A translation question in v. 11: "women" or "wives"?

IV. Back to deacons: faithful husbands and wise household managers (v. 12).

V. Why so much concern over who serves? 2 reasons (v. 13)
