Old Covenant Forgiveness vs New Covenant Forgiveness (Hebrews 10:1-18)
Geoff Volker, November 1, 2024Part of the Grace Chapel Conference series, preached at a Midweek Meeting service
Hebrews 10:1 says that the Law gave only a "shadow of good things to come."
I. The Old Covenant was a covenant of works, with blessings and curses tied to obedience and disobedience.
II. The Old Covenant created a people who were largely unbelievers and who responded to God's good Law by rebelling. The New Covenant creates a people with new hearts who delight in obeying God.
III. In the New Covenant, every aspect of the Old Covenant gets replaced. According to Hebrews, there is a new Law, a new people, a new land, a new temple, a new priesthood. The Old Covenant sacrifices were not sufficient to satisfy God's wrath--but Jesus's one sacrifice finishes all (Heb. 10:11-18)!
IV. And this new forgiveness brings a new motivation (v. 16-17).
